Captains Of All Time: Nepali National Football Team (Page-1)

This blog includes a list of all captains of the Nepali National Football Team. Football in Nepal had been a national sport as early as 1921 during the Rana dynasty. Despite poor facilities at that time football was yet played enthusiastically in between the various teams most of the time without a goal post. Sometimes, they used to play football on the bet of 100/200-castrated goat as well. During the early 30s the teams like Mahabir-11, NRT-11, Jawalakhel-11, and Public Institute-11 etc. were some of the popular clubs lifting the Nepali football.

All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) is the football governing body in Nepal which was founded in 1951. In 1970, Nepal became a member of FIFA, and two years later in 1972, Nepal joined the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Nepal played their first international match on 13 October 1972, where Nepal lost 2–6 to the People's Republic of China. Y.B Ghale is the first Nepali footballer to score the first international goal for Nepal in a "FIFA-recognized tournament" against Kuwait in the 1982 Asian Games where Nepal loss the match by three goals to nil.


At present, Johan Kalin is the Head coach and Biraj Maharjan is the skipper of the team. Currently Nepal Rank in 170 (6 April 2017) position in FIFA Ranking. Without any delay let us find the full list of all time captains of Nepali National Football Team:-

1. Late Rupak Raj Sharma

Late Rupak Raj Sharma, the first national team skipper of the Nepalese football team, played the first international match in 1982 (2039 B.S). Under his captaincy, Nepali National Football Team won the 1st South Asian Federation Games (SAF) in Kathmandu in 1984 (2041 B.S) defeating Bangladesh by one goal to nil. Rupak Raj Sharma was born on 10th Magh 2010 B.S. He captained the National Team from 2030 to 2042 B.S. He was among the most high profile player. Similarly, in the year 2043 B.S. he did the FIFA referee course which made him the first FIFA referee from Nepal.

For all these contributions to the nation, he was honored with the prestigious "Gorkha Dakshin Bahu" and many other rewards and trophies. Unfortunately, On 12th Ashwin, 2049, while returning from Pakistan after refereeing a FIFA event, Pakistan International Airlines Flight 268 was crashed and including Sharma, all 167 people on board were killed in deadliest aviation crash.


2. Late Suresh Panthi

Suresh Panthi, former national football team captain and traffic police inspector Suresh Panthi, died of bone marrow cancer on September 10, 2004. Panthi lead Boys Union Club to the Martyrs Memorial League title in 1975, which remains the club's highest achievement till the day. Similarly, he also won the Tribhuvan Shield, and guided BUC into the final of the Birthday Cup. We are unable to find his photo :(. If you have you can share it with us.


3. Ganesh Thapa

Ganesh Thapa, ex-president of the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) was a great footballer of his era. Thapa is the first player to score the hat-trick for Nepal. He scored a total of 5 goals at the third SAF Games against Bhutan in 1987 in India where Nepal defeated Bhutan by 6-2 goals and in the same tournament he was the top scorer with 5 goals. Nepal lost the finals against India by one goal to nil. He played from various National and Internationals clubs. Ganesh Thapa, one of the most influential figures in Asian football in recent years, and is currently banned for 10 years for bribery.

4. Late Mani Bikram Shah (1967 – 14 May 2018) 

Mani Bikram Shah is one of the most well-known names in Nepalese Football history. He was also known as the "Nepali Maradona" during the '90s as his physical as well as the playing style was just like the famous Argentine International Diego Maradona. He was the one who scored the stunning last-minute free-kick equalizer against India in 1993 where Nepal defeated India on penalties to be crowned champions of South Asian football. Shan captained the national team, earning 48 caps between 1985 and 1998. He died at the age of 51 on 14th May 2018.

5. Raju Kaji Shakya

Raju Kaji Shakya was born in July 1960. Shakya played from 1981 to 1997 for the national team and captained Nepali National Football Team from 1991-1997. His greatest career moment was winning SAFF Game Gold Medal in 1993. Raju Shakya is also the most capped Nepali player with 68 international matches. He holds the record for leading the team for the most number of times as a Captain. He has played many national and international tournaments. International friendlies against USSR and East Germany in 1987 and West Germany in 1989 are the notable matches of his career.

  • Won Gold Medal in 1st South Asian Games Kathmandu in 1984
  • Won Bronze Medal in 2nd South Asian Games Dhaka in 1985
  • Won Gold Medal in 6th South Asian Games Dhaka in 1993
  • Won Silver Medal in 8th SAF Games Kathmandu 1999

Shakya has played for Royal Nepal Army Club (RNAC) Manang Marshyagdi Club (MMC), New Road Team (NRT), Ranipokhari Corner Team (RCT), and Sankata Club.


His Profesional Playing Carrer Beyond Nation:-
  • Victoria Club Bangladesh (1986-1988)
  • Easton End Club Bangladesh 1995 (League Champion)

Currently Retired Shakya Has Been Actively Participating in Football Development Activities in Domestic Level and he is actively coaching Nepali ‘A’ Division Football Club and U-19 Football Team of Nepal. He Has Been Awarded With Various Rewards And Honors.


6. Deepak Amatya

Deepak Amatya Born On 27 Aug 1971 Played His Debut Match On FIFA World Cup 1998 Qualifying Match Against Macau. In His Debut Match Nepal Played a 1 - 1 Draw against Macau. This Was Only The Score Line To Be Remembered In Whole The Qualifying Matches. Amatya‘S Playing History At FIFA Tournaments 6 Appearances 1 Goal 0 Win 1 Draw 5 Losses. During The FIFA World Cup 1996-97, He Made 6 Appearances and Could Score Only A Goal for Nepal in Whole the Tournament. There Were Few More International Goals Amatya Scored For Nepal. He Scored In SAFF Cup In Colombo Against Sri-Lanka. He Scored 1 Against Singapore In China Pre-Olympic Qualifying Round. Similarly, He Has Scored A Gola Against Thailand In Asian Club Championship In Bangkok, Maldives In Asian Youth, India In Rangasalaa (In Friendly Match Preparing For The Olympics).

He Has Played South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship 1996-97 And Scored A Goal In The Championship, Similarly, He Also Has Played Asian Games 1997-98, South Asian Federation Games 1999-00 For Nepal.


7. Dev Narayan Chaudhari

Dev Narayan Chaudhari Born On 13 Feb 1972 Played A Debut Match On FIFA World Cup 1998 Qualifying Match Against Macau, This Match Ended In A 1-1 Draw. Chaudhari Played Continuously For 14 Yrs For Nepal National Team. His Playing History At FIFA Tournaments 12 Appearances 0 Goal 2 Wins 1 Draw 9 Losses. Currently, He Is Living In the USA. He Has Played For Nepal Police Club and Other Various Clubs. He Has Played the Olympic Games, Asian Games, South Asian Games, And Asian Club Championship For Nepal.

8. Upendra Man Singh

Upendra Man Singh Born 27 July 1973 In Bhaktapur, Nepal Is A Former Star Goalkeeper For Nepalese Football Team. Singh Played From 1995-2003 For Nepal National Team. He Also Captained The National Side For Nearly A Decade And Is One Of His Country's Most-Capped Players. He was the star goalkeeper of the nation who saved a crucial shot against India to win a gold medal in the 1993 SAF Games. Winning. It was 2-2 draw in the regular time and in the spot-kick he saved a crucial shot that gave Nepal the title with a 4-3 win over India in the final. He was the first player to win Car in 2062 BS for being the best player of the tournament.

Singh Began His Career At ‘A’ Division Side Annapurna Club In 1990 As Their First Choice ‘Keeper’. There After His Club Career As A Goalkeeper Scaled Further Heights. He Played For Various National And International Clubs And Was Also The Highest Paid Player During His Career.
Some of the National and International clubs he has played for Annapurna, Ranipokhari Corner Team (RCT), Friends Club, New Road Team (NRT), Three Star Club, Singha Tamrong (Thailand), Salgaocars (Goa), Dempo (Goa), Rahmad-gunj (Bangladesh), Brothers’ Union (Bangladesh), MMC, etc
